New recruit here, looking to be a Cobra Driver. I viewed the instructions, and have been trying to follow them, but I have a few questions.
I ordered the Propper gray uniform, ends with 020, but it appears to be a darker shade of gray. My intent is to meet the standard, but I don’t want to do the back and forth with exchanging clothing. Does the attached picture appear to be a suitable shade of gray? Evil gray cat shown for scale.
I would like to pattern my costume after the newest version of the Classified Series Cobra Stinger, where the driver has some textured details to his upper body (see attached.) If I pursue the Classified version, will that deem me ineligible for possible entry into the team?
I’ve ordered a 3D printed helmet from Etsy, in the Classified style. Should my helmet color match the BDU’s? Or does it have to be a specific color match? (I also have a few Star Wars costumes, and they are notoriously picky about such things.)
Finally, I saw on the Facebook page someone had created a missile rack in the back of a Jeep. I would love to do that! Does anyone know of a how-to on creating mock missiles?
I think the shade of grey here looks ok for approval. We definitely understand that color matching is complex with BDUs.
Are the shirt and pants the same color?
The classified version of the costume is excellent. But make sure you’re working from that as your primary reference, so you can use the Field Manual as a base to get started, but you don’t want to mix versions of the figure for approval. For instance on the classified version of the Stinger Driver we’d expect the armored vest, over the traditional H-harness from the classic 3 3/4 figure.
We’re looking for high-quality costumes, but we also try to evaluate the entire costume for approval and provide some leeway. I recommended doing precisely what you’re doing: ask a lot of questions as you build.
Painted the rubber bayonet handle red and ran some nylon webbing thru the sheath for the thigh straps. Likely going to use black tape to secure the free running ends.
I’ve got to figure out how I’m going to create the upper body vest. I’ve thought about using a t-shirt as a template to cut one out of an old yoga mat. To me, this is going to be the trickiest part.
My helmet should arrive today or tomorrow! Lots of sanding in my future.
Some members have used a 3D printed version but I think a eva foam version would work just as well. If you do make one, please document the process/save your templates as I know several folks that would love to build this version!
Wondering if anyone can offer some advice. Bought a printed helmet, rough sanded it, fine sanded, primer, came out looking rough. I applied bondo where I thought necessary, sanded more all over, but it still comes out looking very rough. Should I put glazing/spot putty all over the entire helmet?
I’d suggest a rough sand, then use liquid wood (mixed with acetone to thin it) to fill. Then sand again. Then filler primer! See this short: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/FQmhZI0r32Y
